We are excitedly celebrating four years of business success and our recent Small Business of the Year award thanks to the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce.

Our agency shares love of seniors and the beauty of the elderly. When writing for the ‘Companies that Care’ feature section in the upcoming Lafayette Magazine publication, I wanted to further share into my personal experiences in the care industry. However, with limited space I could only include a tiny part of what I wanted to share.

I opened about how we wipe tears of grieving spouses. She recently lost her high school sweet heart. They had been married over 60 years with 4 adult children and 18 grandchildren, all who miss him dearly. I also spoke about pulling socks on one of our clients when the arthritic hands no longer could. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve my senior clients over the past 20 years. They are the most humbling moments of my life. It is when someone needs me so much for small, daily tasks. They rely on me to assist with such ease and care. They have had bone cancer and the slightest touch sent rivers of pain wracking through their body.

I mentioned how our caregivers sit with dementia clients around-the-clock to ensure safety and comfort. Our care staff assisted my best friend Larry. (He was 80 years-old, me 40, and yet my soul mate from the day I saw his beautiful eyes twinkle.) A retired minister among other great things, my staff would read his favorite scriptures On long and stressful nights, shared words were the only thing that calmed his spirit. My care staff helping my beloved friends humbles me and reminds me of humanity and the genuine care shown for another human being. It is a true blessing each every day.

We have made sacrifices, along with our families and many great co-workers. The seniors we serve receive the best care with many beautiful hands assisting, side-by-side.

I added how our agency embraces a ‘Pay it Forward' approach to life and shows in every care we provide, like the seniors before us. This generation is our last that have WWII vets. When they pass away, and if we are not active listeners, we will lose their wisdom and stories. Furthermore, our youth absolutely need to learn the many hard-learned lessons offered by this generation. We may never know the struggle, pain and suffering they endured to secure our country and freedoms we often take for granted.

I shared that we can speak at an event or meeting to educate on care options. However let us work together and discover new opportunities our generations could connect. Let us find at least one that would give all of us new meaning and a grander sense of life purpose, as we share this journey together.

I concluded with, “Thank you for the opportunity to share about our company and the heart(s) behind it”. What I did not get to include is that every senior and family that our care staff and I have laughed and cried with are still heavily embedded in our hearts. Because of the cumulative effect they all have on our lives, my entire team and I have even more precious and meaningful lives. Our seniors teach us so many wonderful things. And, Homecare By Design exists so that our team can keep providing care over and over and over again…loving each other and trying to do what they teach us to do. They teach to "Better the world, one life at a time," just like they did.

To them with gratitude always,
