Senior Community Without Walls

How to Know

There is no shame in admitting when you need help, but it’s not always easy for our loved ones to recognize how much they may benefit from a helping hand. Identifying when you or a loved one may need in-home care takes a careful eye, which is why we’ve created this simple checklist for your convenience, as it may assist you in helping your loved one to make decisions for their future. Simply read through the list below and make note of which signs you see in the life of your loved one.

The Checklist

Poor Nutrition

Have you noticed unnecessary weight loss in your loved one? Uneaten or spoiled food around the home? Is your loved one relying too heavily on frozen meals? Good nutrition is essential for aging bodies, and neglecting to choose healthy meals may result in rapid decline in bodily functions, extra visits to the hospital, and even require a move to a health center or nursing home.

Decline in Hygiene

Have they been unable to care for themselves the way they used to? Is the house not being kept up to their usual standards? Are they repeating outfits for multiple days in a row? Is their hair or teeth going uncared for? Maybe your loved one is no longer physically able to perform basic hygiene tasks without assistance, or this may even be an indicator of Dementia, depression or impairment of their senses. Personal hygiene plays a major role in maintaining a dignified lifestyle, as well as preventing bacterial infections and social isolation.

Safety Concerns

Has your loved one experienced recent falls? Multiple hospitalizations due to accidental injury? Is your loved one no longer able to safely operate their own vehicle? As we age, we become not only prone to experiencing more accidents, but our bodies also become more fragile, causing us to sustain injuries from these accidents.

Behavior Changes

Is there a lack of interest in activities that used to be enjoyed? Does your loved one seem withdrawn from friends? Have you noticed any significant mood changes? Losing a loved one, experiencing health decline, or losing quality of life can lead to depression, which occurs in seniors just as much as anyone else.

Disorganized Personal Agenda

Is your loved one missing doctor appointments regularly? Are there unpaid bills or invoices stacked on the counter? Are you concerned about your loved one missing important medications? Many times, seniors experience memory loss or become overwhelmed with the many tasks from day to day. This especially occurs when a senior loses a spouse or loved one that formerly managed the household.
